Tucson arena football team changes leagues for 2011
Things have been quiet on the end of the Tucson Thunder Kats, leading some to believe plans for the new arena football team wasn’t going to come to fruition. Arena football will be coming to Tucson, but it will be in a different league than originally planned.
The team has switched leagues for the 2011 season to the American Indoor Football Association from the Indoor Football League. The IFL would have had just two nearby southwestern teams for the Tucson team to play before they would have to travel to Texas to play teams.
The AIFA will have five to six southwestern teams to play, which Thunder Kats owners liked. They said they wouldn’t rule out a move to the IFL next season if there were more teams to play.
Team officials said... Read more

Tucson team will be called Thunder Kats
Tucson's Indoor Football League franchise reintroduced itself Wednesday with a new front office, logo, colors and a name.
The Tucson Thunder Kats will wear electric blue and silver uniforms when they open play in March at Tucson Convention Center.
Demond Williams, the team's president and acting general manager, said he "wanted to get something that was vicious and made sense to Arizona." The team's nickname is spelled with a "K," in part to distinguish itself from the Arizona Wildcats.
"I'm sure the U of A is fine with it," Williams said.
The Thunder Kats name was a runaway winner on the team's website, Williams said, even though it did not place in the Star's official name-the-team contest. The Star's winner was Desert Storm, which garnered 33 percent of the online votes; the Tucson Gunslingers... Read more

Pro football coming to Tucson
Indoor Football League commissioner Tommy Benizio stood up at a press conference at the Westin La Paloma resort on Monday to announce the league would bring a new expansion team to Tucson.
The IFL is currently in its second year of existence and is looking to add a number of teams from the southwestern region of the U.S. before the start of its third season.
The IFL will be become one of a long list of minor league-type professional leagues to bring a team to southern Arizona. The 25-team league hopes to accomplish what a plethora of leagues have failed at in Tucson — maintain a stable professional team.
“We feel like we’re in the right place, we’re in the right time,” Benizio said. “It’s very exciting. We hope this is the first... Read more

Local team expects to pursue ex-Cats
Southern Arizona's sports landscape is riddled with failed pro franchises, a list that seemingly grows by the year.
Tucson's new Indoor Football League franchise believes it can succeed where the Amigos, Fireballs, Gila Monsters, Gunners, Heat, Icemen, Mavericks, Rustlers, Scorch, Sidewinders, Sky, Tiburons and Turquoise all fell short.
"I'm not really worried about that," said Tucson businessman Mario Wiggins, the team's majority owner. "It's going to succeed. There's no reason it's going to fail with me and my staff."
Owners of the yet-to-be-named team (see box) were introduced Monday at a news conference at the Westin La Paloma. Wiggins and partners Dart Clark, Terri Clark and Demond Williams believe the high-scoring, eight-on-eight football will lure fans to Tucson Convention Center in droves.
History, they said, is irrelevant. Here are four reasons why the owners... Read more
